AIMExpo announces additional custom market initiative

THE third annual AIMExpo (American International Motorcycle Expo) at Orlando, Florida, (October 15 - 18) is headed for further growth this year and now includes added v-twin aftermarket features. The event continues to differentiate itself from prior 'mainstream' trade show formulas in the United States and delivers on former MIC Chairman Larry Little's vision of bringing a European style Milan or Cologne Show motorcycle industry experience to the North American motorcycle market.

The 41st annual Custom Bike Show held in Sweden at Norrtällje featured over 200 bikes, entered in 8 classes. The largest established AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building affiliate event (this was the 11th year), over 9,000 visitors from around Europe came to enjoy a weekend that is internationally renowned for the quality of bikes seen there. Competing builders travelled from across Scandinavia and Europe, with bikes coming from Lithuania, Estonia, France, Poland, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands as well as the regular attendees from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. .

Dublin show to be World Championship affiliate again

The ninth biennial Carole Nash Irish Motorbike and Scooter Show is being staged from 27th February to 1st March at the RDS (Royal Dublin Society) in Dublin, Ireland, this year. Regularly attracting 27,000 visitors, the organizers say that there is strong recovery in the small but growing Irish market, and that with over 2,000 sqm. (approx.10,000 sqft) of booth space already sold, the show is destined to be a sell-out and the biggest for many years.

Moscow Custom & Tuning Show, February 20th-22nd

This year's Moscow Custom & Tuning Show, a custom bike show that has always provided highly competitive entries at the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building, is being staged at the 12th annual Moto Park Expo, the leading annual motorcycle show in Russia, at Moscow's IEC "Crocus Expo" facility. Moto Park regularly sees some 100 exhibitors and close to 80,000 visitors. Many of the leading manufacturers are represented at Moto Park, and these have included Harley-Davidson, Polaris (Victory and Indian), Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Triumph and Peugeot.

S&S Cycle three-piece flywheels

S&S Cycle has identified the need for stronger flywheels in v-twin engines with performance modifications. The crankpin/flywheel joint in production Harley flywheel assemblies was not designed to handle the increased power, so the stock flywheels tend to shift out of true. To deal with this issue S&S Cycle is now producing three-piece flywheel assemblies with integral sprocket and pinion shafts, an all-new connecting rod, and a larger crankpin. The company states that the new assemblies are a vast improvement over stock, and are even superior to its own flywheels produced previously.

New tools and parts from JIMS

JIMS continues to design and develop specialist tools for engine builders and one of the latest is its vacuum fed fork filling tool. The patent pending tool is said to eliminate the need to remove the fairings on Touring bikes to change the fork oil. JIMS claims that with the tool it should take about 30 minutes to perform the service compared to 2.2 hours without it.

THE first of two AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building affiliate events taking place in the UK was held in London in February, when The Custom Show took place as part of the MCN London Motorcycle Show. Harley-Davidson has reported strong gains in earnings and dealer new motorcycle sales for the first quarter of 2012. The American Labor Day holiday weekend at the end of August and beginning of September saw the AMD World Championship program make its debut at arguably its most prestigious venue yet. The Harley-Davidson Museum in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, hosted the Milwaukee Rally 110th anniversary year kick-off party, and among the features for visitors was a two-day AMD World Championship affiliate program 'ProShow', followed by the one-day Harley-Davidson Ride-In custom bike show.

Italians take the spoils at first Custom Show at Beaulieu, UK

Abnormal Cycles took the Best in Show prize with 'Speed Demon', a universally admired Harley 1930 VL framed 1919 JD 74 inch engined racer. The first UK Custom Show to be staged at the Beaulieu Estate, home to the National Motor Museum in southern England, defied the weather and produced larger crowds and more bikes in the Custom Show than had been expected. Indeed, those who saw the 90 plus competition entries say that it was the best standard of custom motorcycle design and engineering seen at a show in the UK for several years.

Jeremy Cupp of LC Fabrications is this year's Ultimate Builder United States Champion after winning the FreeStyle class at the US Championship of the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Daytona. Split Image Kustoms won a cash prize of $3000 plus a free place at the 2012 AMD World Championship in Sturgis. The 2011/12 series of Ultimate Builder custom shows hosted at the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows began at the weekend in San Mateo, California. As last year, classes were offered for Freestyle, Modified Harley-Davison (stock engine and frame retaining original geometry) and Performance Custom, and introduced a new class, 'Retro Mod', for builds based on bikes over 25 years old.

Spanish builder Malicia Indigena won their second Sturgis prize at Faro in three years. This year's 30th annual Moto Clube Faro Rally on the Algarve in Southern Portugal saw record crowds in attendance. The affiliate custom bike show, in its 20th year, was won by Jhomba Tapasco of Malicia Indigena from Spain, becoming the first double winner of a World Champs Sturgis prize at the event, having taken the prize in 2009.

The third annual Wild Magazine rally and custom show held in the mountainous Haute Savoie region of France was this year sponsored by W&W Cycles, and again offered two World Championship affiliate 'Sturgis' prizes - one for the best French builder and the other going to the best 'international' guest competitor. The French win went to Antoine Bigel of Blue Line Chopper who will travel to Sturgis in 2012.

New venue for UK affiliate show

OCEAN EVENTS, the organizers of 2011's Custom Motorcycle Show (known as California Dreamin'), which was held in Bournemouth and was one of two UK shows affiliated to the World Championship of Custom Bike Building program, have announced a new location for the 2012 show. The event will now take place at Beaulieu over the weekend of 16/17 June 2012. Beaulieu, in the UK's New Forest, which houses the National Motor Museum, will host the Custom Motorcycle Show alongside its already established annual 'Hot Rod and Custom Car Festival'.

California Dreamin' Expo, situated in Bournemouth, UK, attracted some 2,500 visitors in the course of its two days (May 28-29), with most exhibitors reporting a good standard of buying intent among the custom bike enthusiasts who were attracted to the first custom-specific expo to cater for the South/South West England market for some years. Always a notoriously regional market (something that had dogged prior show attempts), the UK is one of several European markets where more than one show could prosper.

CamTech Customs takes double Ultimate Builder win in Greenville, SC

Last weekend saw Greenville, SC, host the latest of the World Championship program Ultimate Builder affiliate events at the Progressive Insurance sponsored IMS series. CamTech Customs became the first competitor to win both Freestyle and Modified Harley classes at the same event. Builder Robbie Closson's Freestyle winning Bagger was based on a 2010 H-D Road Glide, and featured a 26in Renegade front wheel, cut and raked frame, custom one-piece fairing and a Hayabusa headlight. His Modified Harley winner, 'Rehab', is a 2002 Dyna Sport featuring Performance Machine wheels and brakes.

The past two weekends saw Minneapolis and Chicago host the latest of the World Championship program Ultimate Builder affiliate events at the Progressive Insurance sponsored IMS series. The same two bikes took first and second places at both events, Dana Hallberg's World Championship bike 'Redonkulous' winning in Minneapolis, with Troy Kyne's 'Predasaurus' taking the top prize in Chicago. Third place in Minneapolis went to Outlaw Customs for their Outlaw Prostreet, and Dave Dupor of DD Custom Cycle took third in Chicago with his entry based on a 2009 Harley Road Glide.

Last weekend saw Cleveland host the latest of the World Championship program Ultimate Builder affiliate events at the Progressive Insurance sponsored IMS series. The Freestyle class win was taken by Jesse Bassett of The Gasbox (who collaborated with Huey Schwebs of Cleveland Motorcycle Manufacturing Co on their 2007 World Championship entry) with his 1965 BSA Lightning, with Bill Steele of Steele Kustoms second and fourth. Bill took his second place with 'Fascinator', a stunning automatic transmissioned billet springer high-tech meets old-style lowrider with which he scooped fifth place in the World Championship in 2006.

'Verona' show pulls record crowds

Motor Bike Expo. Verona, Italy,. January 21-23, 2011. Enthusiasm for motorcycling in general, the custom market in particular, is in robust shape going into the new year in Europe, if attendance at this year's Motor Bike Expo is anything to go by. Attendance this year is said to have been some 20 percent up on 2010, at over 120,000 visitors, reflecting the upward trend at motorcycle shows seen in Italy a couple of months earlier when the 'Milan' Show in November also saw its best crowds in a decade.

This past weekend saw the latest in the World Championship of Custom Bike Building program 'Ultimate Builder' affiliate events staged at the Progressive International Motorcycle Show at Washington DC. The Freestyle win was taken by Washington local Alex Lucas with 'Snake', an Ultima engined pro street style daily rider by WEM. Second went to Frank Rutigliano of Two Wheel Mafia with a custom XS 650 bobber, with Roy Chamberlin of C&C Cycle third. Fourth was taken by Jason Nieman of SS Trike, with fifth going to Norman Washington with a customized American Ironhorse chopper.

This past weekend saw the latest in the Progressive International Motorcycle Show series staged at Long Beach, California, with Mike Tomas of Kiwi Indian fame scooping the FreeStyle class win at the fourth round of the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show program. Kootenay takes Ultimate Builder honors in Seattle

An estimated 28,000 show visitors witnessed the latest Progressive International Motorcycle Show held in Seattle, WA, which featured the third round of the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. Greg Falkner, Manager of Product Planning at Harley-Davidson and Yamaha's Warren Fossum, District Manager, helped present the awards.

Christian Dotson takes Dallas Ultimate Builder World Champs affiliate win

Corsicana, Tx. based custom bike builder Christian Dotson scooped top honors in the FreeStyle class at the weekend in the first round of this winter's Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show World Championship affiliate competition, hosted at the Progressive International Motorcycle Show series opener at Dallas, Tx. Dotson won with 'Swingshot', the radically styled project built around a 93 inch Accurate Engineering 'Panhead' style engine with which he announced himself on the custom scene by scoring an impressive 10th place in the AMD World Championship in 2007.

London custom show enters second year

ALEXANDRA Palace in London will once again play host to a custom bike show affiliated to the World Championship of Custom Bike Building in 2011. Now known as the London International Custom Show, it will take place over the weekend of February 26-27 at the iconic North London venue. For its second year at the 'Ally Pally', the event, operated by Andrew Greenwood's Classic Shows, will now be sponsored by UK custom motorcycle magazine Back Street Heroes (BSH).

New UK addition to World Championship Affiliate program

CALIFORNIA Dreamin' Expo is the latest custom motorcycle show to be added to the international affiliate program of the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building. The new show, to be held over the weekend of 28-29 May 2011 at the Bournemouth International Centre, Bournemouth, on the UK's south coast, is being organized by Ocean Events and features Battistinis UK as the title sponsor.

Advanstar's Progressive Insurance sponsored International Motorcycle Shows (IMS) are to stage World Championship of Custom Bike Building Official affiliate event custom bike shows this season, with a total prize fund on offer of over $90,000.00. The IMS series' Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Shows will feature two $3,000.00 first prizes for each of the FreeStyle and Modified Harley-Davidson classes, with an additional $1,000.00 first prize for the Championship program's new Performance Custom class.

Custom Bike Show, Sweden - June 5th 2010

Staged at the port city of Norrtelje, an hour North East of the Swedish capital Stockholm, Custom Bike Show is set to again be the Scandinavian Affiliate event for the World Championship of Custom Bike Building; the sixth time that the event has been a part of the program. Organized by Twin Club MC, and believed to be one of the oldest established custom bike shows in the world, the one-day ride-in event will be staged in its usual Societets Park in Norrtelje on Saturday June 5th.

Mad Builders Custom Show, Mexico

Some 3,000 riders and a total attendance of around 20,000 people turned out for the 2nd annual Mad Builders Motorcycle Rally and Custom Show held over Mexico's National Holiday weekend (May 1st to 3rd, 2010) at Jocotepec, Jalisco. Operated by Caballos Salvajes (Wild Horses), a local motorcycle club, the event was, again, an AMD Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building Affiliate.

THE second annual Hardy Butts Bike Rally will be staged at Lloret De Mar north of Barcelona on Spain's north east coast from June 11th to 13th. This year the event makes its debut as an Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building Affiliate with the winner of the World Champs scrutinized custom show winning expenses contribution to compete at the World Championship at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

European H.O.G. Rally to stage Modified Harley World Champs Affiliate custom show

Being staged at Campione-Lugano in Switzerland (July 16-18) at Switzerland's annual 'Swiss Harley Days' event, one lucky Modified Harley owner will win expenses contribution to be able to take his or her bike to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 2011 to compete at the World Championship of Custom Bike Building.

Mad Builders Custom Show, Mexico

For the second year, the Mad Builders custom bike show in Jocotepec, Mexico, in May (1st to 3rd) is offering a Mexican customizer the chance to compete at the Official World Championship at Sturgis in August. Last year, the first time the event was held, the first ever World Championship affiliate event in Latin America had to be postponed to late May because of the Swine Flu epidemic, but still pulled some 15,000 show visitors.
